Description / key tasks

The Halcon Centre was a grade 2 listed building in Taunton that was attached to a care home and had been unused for  3 years.

PJB Solutions undertook a 26 week project to convert the building to modern and efficient office facilities for 40 staff. The offices are now called Huish House. The key tasks were:

  • Rewire,
  • Extensive data cabling,
  • Internal redecoration,
  • External decoration,
  • New kitchens,
  • toilets,
  • Creation of storage spaces,
  • Remodel and replace the cornices using authentic materials
Challenges & successes

The major challenge was working in a listed building because of the age of the property, the potential for ‘unknown’ problems to arise, plus the need to use authentic materials and to maintain sympathy with the original building.

A serious safety problem arose when rot was found in the roof. The building had to be made safe and then repairs carried out. Piers were re-built, rotting timbers were replaced with fabricated metal shoes. The roof problem had the potential to seriously disrupt the project schedule.

Timescale was a challenge: reorganising and keeping to the 26 week schedule despite dealing with problems that arose.

Close liaison with the building inspector and the listed building inspector as well as structural engineers and the conservation officer.

Doesn’t know of any other contractor who would have continued to work throughout the roof disruptions and work so well and collaboratively to meet deadlines.
